FAQ:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What time should my garbage be set out?

A: We ask that your garbage is set out by 6:00 AM on your collection day. Our trucks and drivers occasionally have to make changes to their normal routes depending on the truck’s capacity, customer needs, and employee time off. With those things in mind, we prefer that trash is set out early so that we can ensure we can pick up everyone on schedule!

Q: Is there anything that can’t go into my garbage, on my regular scheduled collection day?

A: Yes, there are some items that we (and sometimes the landfill) do not accept:

  • Appliances

  • Large Electronics

  • Batteries

  • Tires

  • Dead Animals

  • Yard Waste

  • Hazardous Materials

  • Wet Paint

  • Needles/Syringes

  • Construction or Demolition Debris

Some of these items, however, CAN be picked up separately for additional fees. This applies to both short-term and regular customers. You can find the cost of those fees at the bottom of this section. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Q: What if I have more garbage than usual?

A: There’s nothing wrong with having extra garbage, however, please contact us in advance before leaving extra garbage out. Some items may require an additional charge. For larger cleanouts, a Roll Off dumpster will likely be a more cost-effective option which we are happy to help with. For home improvement projects, a Roll Off is also needed as construction debris cannot be included with municipal waste.

Q: What if my garbage did not get picked up?

A: If your garbage did not get picked up on your collection day, please contact us right away. There could be several reasons why this happened:

  • The collection schedule was adjusted due to a holiday. Our holiday schedule is posted on our website, reminders can also be found on our social media. We also have the option to send reminders to your email address, and/or SMS Alert if you have signed up to receive them.

  • On rare occasions, weather conditions are too hazardous for our drivers. We will make every attempt to notify you when a decision has been made to suspend a daily route due to weather. You may also sign up for SMS Alerts to receive this information via text to your mobile phone!

  • An item or items were set out that we do not accept.

  • Your garbage container was blocked or the drive to get there was blocked or impassable. This includes snow removal and mud. If your dumpster or tote is in a location that our truck could potentially get stuck in or is unsafe for our driver, please contact us about relocating your dumpster (we may recommend relocation). We require a clear path to your dumpsters and recommend 3 feet of clearance on all sides.

Q: What if I won’t be home for an extended period of time?

A: We can suspend service until you have returned. Just let us know when you will be leaving, and when you are ready for your garbage service to resume.

Q: What if I have a question about my bill?

A: Please call our office directly at (641) 648-5071 or our toll free number 1 (800) 782-0031. You may also contact us via email at Info@McDowellandSons.com.

Q: Can I pay for my garbage service with a credit/debit card or EFT?

A: Yes! McDowell and Sons can now accept cards and bank transfers as forms of payment. You can also receive your invoices and make your payments online. We are happy to help with set-up please contact us.

Q: What do I do if my can/dumpster is damaged?

A: Although we rely on our customers to protect and not abuse our dumpsters and cans, we understand normal wear and tear is bound to happen. If that is the case, we will either replace or repair the can or dumpster at no cost to you. We ask that customers on mindful of what they put in their cans/dumpsters. If you were to cause damage to the dumpster/can you will have to pay for its replacement. If your can/dumpster is damaged, please call (641) 648-5071.

Q: Does the lid to my trash can need to be closed?

A: Yes, the lid to your trash cans must be fully closed. For the sake of customer privacy, the well-being of residents, animals, and the environment, and our driver’s effectiveness, it is important to shut the lid(s) on your can/dumpster before pick up!
